Wellness and Prevention
at St. Camillus: About
one-half of the people
over the age of 65 in
our community sustain a
fall each year.
Fortunately the
majority of these falls
are non-injurious.
However falls are an
indication of a decline
in strength and
balance, a preventable
decline that if left
unchecked will result
in mobility disability.
Other indications of a
decline in fitness
include a slower
walking speed,
difficulty going up
stairs, using your arms
to get up out of a
chair and earlier and
more noticeable levels
of fatigue. Fitness is
a multifaceted concept
that includes not only
cardiovascular
endurance and muscle
strength, but also good
nutrition and an alert
and engaged mind.
St. Camillus is
interested in helping
adults in our community
age more successfully.
We offer both
educational and fitness
programs that help
prevent or minimize
losses of balance and
mobility, the onset of
memory loss and the
pain that often
accompanies arthritis.
Educational programs
include wellness and
prevention lectures on
the power of exercise,
nutritional aspects of
aging, purposeful
living (vocation/
volunteering to promote
successful aging),
spirituality, and
memory retention. Other
topics include: living
with arthritis,
managing low back pain,
what to expect from
your total joint
replacement and how to
get the most out of an
exercise program.
Exercise classes are
available for adults
living in our
community. The “Healthy
Steps” program
emphasizes strength,
balance and preventing
falls and functional
loss. Our “Moving
Forward” program is an
exercise class that
improves fitness in
those who have had
neurological problems
including a stroke or a
brain injury. And
“Smooth Moves” is a
dance class that
improves muscle control
and movement patterns
for those who have
Parkinson’s Disease.
Optimal aging is St.
Camillus’ goal for you.
Join us, if aging
gracefully and
productively is your
goal.
